Nursing Home Negligence & The Stages of A Bedsore

New York Nursing Home Abuse Lawyers

Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers, are a common problem for nursing home residents who have limited or no mobility. If left untreated, bedsores can develop into serious health complications, including infections and even death. Nursing homes have a legal responsibility to prevent and treat bedsores, but unfortunately, many fail to do so.

As a result, many nursing home lawsuits are filed. Bedsores develop in four stages, each representing an increasing level of severity:

  1. Stage 1: The skin may appear discolored and feel warm or firm to the touch. The site could be painful or itchy. At this stage, the sore is still relatively minor and is often treatable with proper care.
  2. Stage 2: In this stage, the skin has broken, and a shallow wound has formed. The area may be tender or painful. There may be fluid leaking from the wound.
  3. Stage 3: The sore has become deeper and extends into the tissue beneath the skin. In this stage, the wound could appear to be a crater-like hole and may be filled with yellow or white pus.
  4. Stage 4: The sore is very severe in this stage. The wound will have penetrated through the skin and tissue, exposing bone, muscle, or tendons. The area may also be infected, resulting in significant pain and discomfort.
