Nursing Home Abuse – More Common Than You Think

Nursing home abuse is highly prevalent in New York. The pandemic has only served to make these conditions worse. Neglect in a nursing home can be the result of something as simple as staff shortages, insufficient background checks or maintenance issues. Whether intentional or not, nursing homes can become a source for abuse, which can lead to the death of a loved one.

Nursing home abuse can take the form of physical abuse, sexual abuse, medication errors, bedsores, frequent falls, and more. Physical abuse involves physically harming the patient and includes any inhumane forms of restraint. Sexual abuse can arise either from taking part or watching without consent. Both physical and sexual abuse can also lead to criminal charges.

Medication errors take the form of incorrect prescriptions, incorrect dosage amounts, and giving medication off schedule. Bedsores are another common sign of neglect. They develop as a result of a patient being left in one position for extended periods of time. Bedsores also occur if left in dirty or soiled clothing for too long. While it doesn’t sound life-threatening, an infection as a result of a bedsore can lead to death if severe enough.

Falling injuries may occur if staff don’t take proper precautions. It is up to the nursing home to assess whether or not a resident is a fall-risk and take measures to prevent it. With repeated falls, there’s an increased chance of a serious fall resulting in permanent injury or death.

If you or a loved one were injured in a nursing home, The Licatesi Law Group can help you determine if negligence was involved. Proving negligence is the key to a strong nursing home lawsuit. Give us a call at (516) 227-2662 and ask to speak with one of our experienced attorneys.
