What are the Dangers of Using a CPAP?

Sleep Apnea is a common and potentially serious medical condition that results in trouble breathing while asleep, requiring the use of a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) device to clear the airways. As CPAP machines are consistently used, they wear down and can cause more harm than good to come to the user.

As the CPAP machine wears down, the sound-reducing foam found within it can become dangerous. This can lead to the user developing cancer and other serious health issues. The potential health risks aren’t limited to only the airways. Some risks include lung disease, heart attacks, respiratory failure, and cancer within various organs. The risks of developing cancer are not limited to the obvious, such as lung cancer or nasal cancer. You could develop several different cancers including but not limited to brain cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer, bladder cancer, and breast cancer. You may have been affected by your CPAP machine if you experience any airway irritation or inflammation, cough and sinus infections, headaches, dizziness, hypersensitivity, or pressure in your chest. If you suspect your CPAP device is damaging your health, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Are All CPAPs Dangerous?

Currently, Philips Respironics is the main manufacturer with products being recalled. Some of their products being recalled are DreamStation, SystemOne Q-Series, Dorma 400/500, REMstar SE Auto, Trilogy 100/200, and A-Series BiPAPs. If you have a CPAP or BiPAP machine and have not yet checked for recalls, it’s strongly recommended that you research if there have been any recalls on your device.

Why is Philips Being Sued?

In June 2021, Philips Respironics recalled millions of CPAP machines due to a toxic foam located inside their CPAP machines. Inhalation of the particles from the toxic foam has been shown to cause a copious number of health issues, including severe respiratory complications, and even cancer. Additionally, Philips has consistently failed to provide proper notice to their customers about the recalls and is even suspected of knowing about the toxicity of the foam years prior to the recall. Due to the lack of warning, many developed severe health conditions from continued use of their CPAP machines. Countless numbers of Philips’ customers have initiated lawsuits as a result.

Am I Eligible for Compensation?

If you have used a Philip’s CPAP machine in the past, you may be entitled to significant compensation if you can show the following:

  1. You purchased a Philip’s CPAP machine in the past.
  2. You sustained an injury or illness as a result of your use of a Philip’s CPAP machine.
  3. You show that the Philips CPAP machine experienced foam deterioration.

If you or a loved one have developed serious health complications as a result of regular use of a Phillips Respironics CPAP or BiPAP product, you could be eligible for compensation.
