We are all dependent on Amazon one way or another in our lives through online shopping. However, controversy exists on the degree of liability Amazon should face if one of its delivery trucks is involved in an accident. According to a report from ProPublica, Amazon does not take enough responsibility for motor vehicle accidents involving its delivery trucks. Furthermore, the New York Times has reported that Amazon’s emphasis on fast deliveries has contributed to 60 known accidents involving Amazon trucks and 10 deaths arising from those accidents since 2015. Amazon has argued that it is not liable for any of these accidents involving its contractors, some of which have occurred in cars, trucks, and vans that have not been certified as official Amazon vehicles. Moreover, according to the New York Times report, Amazon mandates that 999 of 1000 deliveries arrive on time, yet Amazon provides their contractors with less training and preparation than UPS and Fedex. This is in large part due to the fact that most of the people who deliver packages for Amazon are independent contractors. Being in a truck accident can be a dangerous and emotional situation as it is and as information develops about accidents with Amazon truck drivers, it can make these situations more anxiety-inducing.
