Is Reckless Driving on the Rise During COVID-19 Pandemic

Sparse traffic on U.S. roads during the coronavirus pandemic has spawned a spike in speeding and other types of reckless driving, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). While the number of cars on the roadway may be less than usual as hundreds of thousands of people are forced to stay home, speeding still remains a serious concern particularly as there are fewer people on the roadway and a greater ability to travel at a faster speed. Speeding has always been a major factor in causing fatal car accidents and serious personal injuries in Long Island, and five boroughs including Queens, Brooklyn, and Bronx.  In New York City, automated speed cameras issued 24,765 speeding tickets on March 27 — nearly double the number issued daily a month earlier — despite far fewer cars being on the road.  Recently, a driver speeding down the streets of Manhattan during the coronavirus lockdown wrecked a rare $750,000 Porsche after losing control and crashing into several vehicle.
